Having arrived in the U.S. with nothing, Rafaela understands firsthand the power of relationships, community and compassion. Born into one of the poorest communities in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Rafaela worked her way out of poverty and relocated to San Diego, where she took night and weekend classes to learn English while working to support her family.
